This shadow box features our original papercraft design of Violet the orca breaching out of the ocean in a happy leap in front of the sunset. This design was inspired by a photo of Scarlet (AKA “J50”), a baby orca who lived off the coast of Washington state and sadly passed away in 2018 after being observed as severely emaciated. Our design remembers her joy and the impact we have on our oceans. There are eight layers of cardstock in this design, layered with permanent foam adhesive to add depth. The bottom layer of the papercraft is held in place against the fabric backing of the shadow box using pins, so that the design can be removed and the frame reused. All paper used in this papercraft is acid- and lignin-free, ensuring that the design will not yellow or degrade for years to come. The light gray frame measures 10 inches H x 10 inches W x 1.75 inches D and features a sawtooth hanger on the back for easy installation. The frame is constructed from all new materials, including MDF board with a wood grain veneer, and a fabric-covered backing inside the frame. Our process of creation of this piece includes illustrating digitally, transforming the images into cut files, cutting all layers using an automatic cutting machine, and hand assembling the final piece. This frame will include a separate paper with educational material about the conservation of the species depicted inside.
